1. Amores Perros
An Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu film set in Mexico City that entwines 3 stories of 3 very different people. An excellent cast and with some familiar faces to those who watch Spanish Language films. A raw and gritty drama will have you feel all manner of emotions throughout. You might read mixed reviews because some of the scenes depict strong animal cruelty, so not a fluffy, cup of cocoa flick. If you watch it with an open mind, you'll get into the strong characters and really enjoy the film.
2. Todo Sobre Mi Madre (All About My Mother)
Pedro Almodovar's profound and compassionate film set in Spain is the pinnacle of Spanish contemporary cinema. The main roles are all female and there are some superb performances, most notably the lead role by Cecilia Roth. Fresh, surprising, tragic. If you watch it once, you'll probably watch it again and again, and then go to find all of Almodovar's other films.
Best Spanish Language Films
Our recommendations for the best Spanish Language films. Of all the areas and resources we have recommended on this site, this is the only area where we weren't unanimous. Everyone fancied themselves as a film critic and had a good case for a different order of favourites. However, what we have is five genuinely fantastic films, with great award winning acting and directing. These should act as a good introduction into Spanish and Mexican filmmakers and there are loads more great films not included here. So if you want to learn, put on the English subtitles and concentrate on the speaking. If not, they're great films to enjoy anyway.
